Digital Photography Tutorials - Camera Exposure - Part 1

Camera exposure basically determines the extent of darkness of lightness of an image when it is captured. While that might seem like a very important factor (which it is), the same can be controlled by the right setting of 3 elements, also known as the exposure triangle. These are the shutter speed, ISO speed and aperture. Once you have these three rights, you are sure to click the perfect picture. This digital photography tutorial is going to explain how you can do that.

To give a more simple explanation of the camera's exposure, think of it as a bucket in which you have to collect rain water. When there is a very high rate of waterfall, three factors are important for the task at hand - the quantity of water you want to collect, the time duration it is left exposed to the rain, and the width of the bucket. The right mix of these ensures that you don't collect too little (and underexposed photograph) or too much (overexposed). There are many factors that would determine how you mix and match these components. For instance, if the rain is falling at a faster pace, leaving the bucket out even for a short while can do the job. This is in direct relation to the fact that the light, just like the rain, is not under your control, and you need to make suitable adjustments depending on the situation at hand.

Here's a brief of what each aspect of this triangle does:

Aperture is responsible for the area over which light enters the camera.

ISO speed is responsible for the sensitivity of the camera's sensor to light.

Shutter speed is responsible for duration of exposure.

Here, while you might think that it's a relatively easier job to get the right exposure, what this digital photography tutorial aims to highlight is that you would almost certainly have to choose between which aspect you want to focus on. Think of it as a trade-off - shutter speed impacts motion blur, ISO speed impacts image noise, and aperture impacts depth of field. Changing the setting of one is sure to have an impact on the other. Choose wisely.

Shooting in RAW: Why You Should If You Have a DSLR

When you first get a DSLR, you may hear and wonder what shooting in raw is all about? When you take a photo using a camera, it usually saves it in a JPEG format. This is a good file format for saving space but the trade-off is that you lose some quality.

The RAW format is almost like a "digital negative". While it takes up more space on your memory card, you are able to retain more detail in the photo as well as alter things like exposure and white balance after you've taken the photo. It also bypasses any of the camera's built in processing so you're left with an image that is a much closer representation to the actual scene in terms of light, colour and shadow!

Some of the most beneficial things about shooting in RAW are:

Post processing: after shooting your photo when you come to edit it on the computer you can change settings that you might have gotten wrong or not quite right. Did you under-expose the picture? Not a problem, you can ramp up the exposure with a RAW file. Got the wrong white balance setting or maybe the image has a colour tint you're not quite happy with. You can edit these and much more with a RAW file afterwards

Quality: when you shoot in RAW you are letting the camera take the best quality photos, and not worrying about how much space it might take up. This lets the camera take a photo without having to perform any lossy compression and means you'll have more details in the photo when you are zoomed in 100%. It also lends itself better to sharpening which is something you might perform on your image.

Workflow: the workflow for RAW files is a lot better than editing with a JPG. There are many more options to non-destructively edit your image, and because of all the additional info the file has about when the photo was taken it gives you the photographer a lot more scope for post processing.

Hopefully these points are reason enough for you to turn your DSLR's image format to RAW and give it a go! You might be surprised at the larger file sizes but when you've spent a day shooting in RAW and sit down to edit your photos; it will be so much easier to get your photos looking the way you want!

Tips For Taking Great Travel Photos

The fantasy of traveling to exotic places and visiting far-away lands are images that are only viewable in our imaginations. If we are lucky enough to travel to any of these places and experience the majestic beauty each one them has. Having physical images to share and have as a reminder of each location would allow you to relive the vacation each time you looked at them. Every location has it's own local flavor and unique look and the difficult part is capturing that feel in the photos your take. You are trying to capture all that you see, smell, and hear in your photographs. It's easy to capture what you see in a photograph. However, trying to capture a smell or a sound so you'll remember them long after you leave is a unique challenge. Travel and photographer go together like hot dogs and baseball. Your journey starts the minute you arrive at your destination.

Before you leave on your vacation you should go to your local park and a playground and practice on people in the park. If you see a group of kid playing on the swings pretend you are taking a picture of an exotic landscape. You'll find that if you practice in a setting that you are comfortable with. You'll be more prepared for the real thing.

The great thing about travel photography you don't have to be a professional to capture great pictures. Today there are so many good quality cameras that are on par with many professional quality cameras that won't cost you more than a few hundred dollars. This is why almost anyone can show how they see the world through their camera. Practice and more practice is what you need to familiarize yourself with your camera. Don't wait until you are enjoying your vacation to try and figure out how to use your camera. This will lead you to extreme frustration as well as not being able to use your camera the correct way. Creating great vacation photos just takes a little planning on your part.

Any good photographer will tell you that you need to plan ahead for a shoot. The same applies to taking pictures while you are traveling. You need to carefully plan out where you are going and what you types of pictures you would like to capture. Taking a few notes down of what the weather is going to be like and when the sunrise and sunset are going to be. You don't have to spend half of your trip planning things out and figuring out your itinerary. It's just a good idea to have in mind general information written down that will save you time once you out exploring your travel destination.

Always have your camera on you when you are out exploring. Make sure you have your camera ready at all times. You may find yourself missing out on a great opportunity if you don't have your camera ready to go. Focus on your framing and make sure you are trying to get more than just your subject in the photo. Make sure you get close to your subject. You don't want to take pictures of your family far a distance so far away that they look like little dots in the picture. You want a clean close up that shows the surrounding areas around your subject. If you find yourself trying to take a picture of a large building or object you'll want to stand back far away from the object. This will allow you to get the majority of what you are shooting within the picture you are taking.

Lighting is an important part of any picture you are taking. This can be an issue in locations such as a beach or on the open ocean for example. I try to follow the rule of getting up early and staying up late on all of my vacations. It's just too difficult to plan your whole vacation around dusk and dawn. You can however try and visit locations that you are interested in during the early morning or late evening hours. I always have enjoyed sun setting shots as they always seem to add a spectacular element to my pictures. So, you'll find the taking your photos at dusk add the extra little element of shadowing in your shots.

Make sure you are prepared for various reactions when taking pictures of total strangers. I've always been of the opinion that you should ask for permission if you are going to take a close up of a person. They may tell you no you can't take a picture of me and that's something you that you are probably going to hear a lot. Most cultures abroad don't have the issues with having their picture taken that most Americans do. Do your homework before you leave on your travels and make sure you know the local customs.

Europeans for example don't seem to have as much of a problem and most won't even pay you any attention. In other cultures taking a picture of someone is like taking their soul. You should always check local policies on what you can shot and what you can't shoot in countries like China and Russia. You may find yourself in a lot of trouble if you are caught taking pictures of buildings or people that are forbidden to have pictures taken.

When you are trying to put together a timeline of your photos to try and tell the story of your vacation. Try and piece together the important places as your center piece. Use the details that took along the way to each location to fill in the locations along the route. Think of telling your journey like you would put together a slide show of the places you saw. Taking shots of simple and what some would consider mundane shots that remind you something special that you encountered on your trip. This way you'll be able to go back and revisit your travels just as you took them on your trip.

We are all travel photographers no matter where we go. With inexpensive digital cameras and memory that's very inexpensive these days. It's easier than ever to document your travels. You don't have to worry about rolls and rolls of film and having them developed. You can looks at your photos while you are shooting them to make sure you are capturing all that you want. Your travels are sometimes short and only last at times for no more than a few days. The pictures you take last a lifetime are the memories you have of your travels.

The Toughest Digital Cameras Of 2012

In the past, many people who own cameras wished for tougher units that can stand drops, bumps and can be submerged in deep water. This wish has been granted and so we now have digital cameras that are tougher than ever.

And how tough can they get? The waterproof ones can be submerged in water as deep as 33 feet. The sturdy ones can withstand drops from a height of five feet without getting any damage and other units can still work well even in a freezing temperature of 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

Powershot D20

Canon's Powershot D20 camera is not only waterproof but it's also shock-proof and freeze-proof. It has a 5x optical zoom lens, a 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 processor that contribute to low-noise and quality images. This unit also has image stabilization which allows users to better capture still photos and videos.

This Powershot model is ideal for use outdoors because of its wind-reduction technology. This particular feature reduces noise caused by the wind. Other features include a three-inch LCD, a built-in GPS and an underwater macro mode that helps in capturing close-up shots.

Coolpix AW100

Nikon's Coolpix AW100 sports a great design with a tough exterior, GPS and gestural control. It is waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof and is lightweight. Other cool features are a 5x optical zoom, full HD movie capability, Expeed C2 image processor and 16-megapixel sensor with ISO sensitivity.

Available in bright metallic orange, the color has a purpose and it's meant to keep the camera visible when used in murky deep waters, during winter storms or when placed in dark bags.

Cyber-shot DSC-TX20

This Sony Cyber-shot model is waterproof (up to 16 feet), shockproof (up to five feet) and freezeproof. It has a 3-inch LCD with a resolution of 921,600 dots, high definition video recording capability, a built in microphone and an image that is 16.2 megapixels.

The camera also has two stabilization features - the standard Optical SteadyShot for still images and the Active SteadyShot. During movie capture, the unit is able to save 12 megapixel images without affecting the video feed.

Lumix DMC-TS4

Panasonic's Lumix can be submerged at deeper waters compared to the other brands. You can swim underwater for an hour up to 40 feet using the camera and take pictures of the wonderful sea creatures and plants as well as yourself without worry.

It has a built-in GPS, barometer and altimeter and has a full high definition video capability. Other features worth considering are its Auto, Program AE.

What's great about this unit is that it comes with a wrist strap that will never fall off your wrist. The strap has a sliding lock that you can simply press down and move closer to your wrist to secure the camera on your hand. This is available in orange, blue, silver and black.

While these camera brands have passed the toughest challenge, do keep in mind that they're not perfect. As such, they still have weaknesses just like any other type of machine.

Technique and Artistry of Food Photography

Food photography has a special place in the world of commercial photography because of how unintimidating it can be at first. Snapshots on mom-and-pop dinner menus and amateur food pictures on twitter have made anyone believe that they have the artistic eye for food photography. However, anyone who has studied or attempted professional level photography understands the complexity of making a dish look as aesthetically pleasing as possible.

The goal of good food photography is to sell or promote the food. This may seem like an underwhelming prospect, but that mindset betrays ignorance. Food photography is a descendant of still life painting, and opens the subject matter to the full brunt of the photographer's art. In food photography, the commercial photographer is invited to cultivate their technique, especially through the use of lighting, props, and shot selection.

The lighting in photographing food is essentially dictated by the dish being photographed. However, a rule of thumb for most shots is to use as much natural lighting as possible. Flash lighting can be a little too harsh on delicate foods; however, don't certain dishes beg to be lit in more creative ways? Fresh, crisp lighting is standard for a salad or fresh fruit dish, but other foods have different qualities. Wouldn't you want to see the glistened char of a steak or grilled dish shine from a fiery, earthy lighting? Or the clashing saturated colors of the ingredients on a pizza dish? Focus on the qualities of your subject, and emphasize those qualities to form your own lighting style.

Props in food photography are usually secondary, but can tie a shot together if utilized in the correct manner. The best way to use props is to emphasize the meal and make it more appealing. There are many different household substances which can be used as props to doctor up food shots, almost like make-up for a model. A light brushing of vegetable oil can put an appetizing sheen on any surface. Light garnishes like diced nuts, sesame seeds, or parsley can add texture and complexity to a shot, even if they have no place in final dish. Even hairspray can be used to preserve the moisture and hold of cakes and breads over long shoots. Never be afraid of utilizing a new prop or substance for the sake of a better photo.

Finally, shot selection is huge. The eye of the artists is not only concerned with HOW to shoot something, but WHAT to shoot. In some cases, the preparation of a meal could be more aesthetically appealing that the dish itself. Maybe a shot of the chef kneading and preparing the dough will sell a pizza better than an overhead portrait of the finished pie. Or maybe the cut from within a steak will add a color and contrast that will be more appealing that a grilled surface. A good food photographer will be able to find the best way to shoot each dish, as well as the best time of the meal to shoot it.

My First Steps in the World of Digital Photography - Choosing the Right Camera

A lot has changed in recent years when it comes to digital photographs. Cameras can be found at every step, mobile phones, tablets, computers, music players, watches, etc. Many of them, however, is used to video conversation or to share your pictures. Unfortunately, you can not say about the pictures that are professional quality. A lot of people think it's enough. Well, maybe so, but these pictures are suitable only to show on the social profiles or websites and not often are suitable for printing or processing.

However, we are not enough. We want to keep an image of a family, a place, an event on a high-quality pictures, to be able to print them in the future, enlarge or edit. So what do we do? We are buying digital camera. The so-called dSLR (digital SLR). This is a camera that combines features of a digital camera with a professional SLR camera optics. And here we encounter the problem.

What camera to choose?

There are so many on the market.

Which is the best?

So let's start from the beginning, bearing in mind that this camera will be used to learn photography. It has to be something easy to use, but should also have a professional camera features.

Should I buy a new or used camera?

If you do not mind to have something that is used by someone else, I recommend to buy used camera, paying particular attention to the condition of the camera is. In what state are the lens, is there are no scratches on them. In what state is the sensor. Are all the camera functions are working without a problem. Scratches on the casing or torn cover does not interfere with taking good or perfect pictures, you can also very easily repair the damage or replace. However, if you want to possess a new camera and you do not wish for this money, go ahead. It's your hard earned money. However, no matter whether you are buying new or used, both will be able to perform the same quality of image. Anything more will depend on your skills. When choosing the camera head to invest in the system, not in a compact camera. The camera, which has separate lenses and separate body, has much more to offer. Due to this the camera lenses are interchangeable, you can adapt the camera depending on what image you will perform and where it will be taken. Lenses you can then use with the new body which you will buy in future.

So what camera brand to choose?

Most lenses available on the market is from Canon and Nikon. They are more accessible and their quality is very good. But you do not have to be limited to this two brands. There are many different, such as Sony, Olympus or Kodak. It may be that in your area will be more available lenses of these brands. Brand selection is also very dependent on what lenses you choose. Canon or Nikon lenses have anti-shaking system build in by which making them more expensive.

What resolution should have our new camera, and what is the resolution?

Higher resolution is a larger picture. In reality, however, big part of this resolution is rejected for noise reduction and anti-shaking system. Good results can be obtained, for cameras with resolution from 6MP (mega pixels).

Is there a need to have a big display?

Most of the pictures you will not be able to check until you see them on the big screen. Any kind of blur and flaws will not be visible on the camera screen. It is not recommended to take the camera for its display. Surely you will not be watching movies on it. Is only as a preview. But always remember to do a couple of shots of the same object, you can then choose the best picture.

More on the selecting the first camera will write in the next article. In the meantime, I want to invite you, to a page where in a fun and easy way you can learn more about new digital cameras http://blog.markholyoakephotography.com

The Importance of Maternity Photography

Importance of Maternity and Infant Photography

Capturing you special moments while you are pregnant and during the first days of your child's life will leave you with images to be cherished for a lifetime. Here are just a few of the reasons why you should consider capturing these precious times.

Maternity Photography

- Being a unique photo subject. Professional photographers consider pregnant women as one of the most unique and beautiful shooting subjects. A sexy and well-contoured body is easy to find but a pregnant woman with that perfect glow and bloom is considered a challenge.

- Improving self-esteem. As psychologists have proven, several pregnant women feel insecure about their figure and over-all look during pregnancy. As their tummies get large and they accumulate additional weight, they generally feel uglier and unhappy. Maternity photography is just one of the alternatives to counteract these feelings and eventually improve self-esteem. This art stresses the fact that there is beauty in pregnancy. Most of the time, photography studios often provide the best grooming tips for their pregnant models or subjects.

- A way to remember memories. Pregnancy is just a once in a lifetime experience. And there's no better alternative of reminiscing this wonderful moment but with a professionally taken photograph. Your photo can be enjoyed and shared with your loved ones especially when your child eventually grows and ages.

- A way to celebrate the incoming member of the family. Bearing a child is always considered a blessing. And capturing maternity images is just one of the unique and simple ways to celebrate it. It will constantly be the reminder for parents especially the moms on the hardships as well as the happy moments felt while they are waiting for the baby to finally arrive.

Infant Photography

- It's the most adorable image you can have on your child. An infant or a newborn child is extremely cute, adorable, and cuddly. But this adorable look will not last long because babies grow fast. Hence, you only have a couple of months to take these beautiful pictures before they eventually become playful and naughty.

- Creating a life story out of photographs. Most people are now lucky that image and video technologies are available and accessible compared from the past. Back then, only a few families particularly the wealthy ones can afford to contract the services of a photo lab, studio, or a painter who will create a portrait of the child. Today, digital cameras are now widely available and there's no longer a reason for any family not to have a complete photo of the children from infancy, teenage, to adulthood.

- Remembering baby features that you might forget over time. If you have a newborn baby, you usually notice and get fond of certain features and details about him or her. Some examples include a dimple, cute tiny toes, lips, eyelashes, cute nose and eyes, etc. Infant photography is not only limited to a whole infant perspective, it can also be used to capture and remember these tiny details of your baby even as years pass by. An expert photographer will usually have plenty of ideas on how to perfectly showcase these cute details in the resulting images.

As you can see, there are numerous reasons that you should consider getting portraits taken during this wonderful and exciting time. A good digital camera will let you capture some good images and if you are looking for a more professional style try one of our Southern Illinois Photographers or one near you!

Shooting Interesting Portraits

"You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved." - Ansel Adams

Everyone who can afford to buy a digital camera seems to call themselves a photographer these days. Some have the skills to justify the claim but purists would still fight you tooth and nail at using that title. After all, they went through a lot of training to be called photographers and loosely using the term can understandably be offensive.

Shooting portraits takes a keen eye and a great set of skills. Post-photography effects with Photoshop and other software can make these images look a lot better but the art of creating an interesting portrait starts with your vision as the photographer.

If you are an aspiring photographer, you should know that the learning process will always be an ongoing chain. You learn as you should more and more portraits and as you start playing with different elements. As with all the great photographers, START WITH FILM. This is the foundation of your skills. Digital photography is not the same as shooting with a good 'ol roll of film.

Know where to stand. The greatest photographers always know where to stand (sit or lie back) to shoot their subject. It's all about your unique perspective. Photography has a lot to do with perspective and knowing which angle to shoot from is the best start of any interesting portrait.

Shapes, lines, and curves. These are also basic elements of design and like everything visual, the eye will be attracted to patterns and structures. Choosing a subject that uses one, or all of these elements, make a good portrait composition.

Movement. One of the reasons why painting and photography were conceived was to capture a fraction of a moment worth remembering. Creating a portrait that encapsulates a millisecond of something in motion will give character to a composition.

Lights and shadows. These extreme ends have always played a valuable role in photography. It will take a few tests and a lot of shots to perfect the art of capturing light on film but once you've gained a good understanding of light and shadows, you'll be well on your way to being a good photographer.

Out of the box elements.Seeing a bride with her long trail and gown, playing on a tire swing over a calm lake mixes a lot of elements that don't usually go together. But, in a portrait, it draws you in and tells a visual story of the unfamiliar-people are often interested in the unfamiliar. Remember, playing with things that don't mix can create beautiful images you never thought you'd be able to see in one frame.

Photography Tips: A Digital Photography Tutorial On Picking The Right Digital Camera

Picking the right digital camera depends on three main points:

1. Understand the words.

There are many great cameras on the market. There are also many not-so-great cameras on the market. So it is important that you understand the limitations and terms of the camera.

Not to worry, I will be defining many of these terms and qualities in this course.

2. Speed.

I find it very frustrating when I try and take a picture with my phone and there is a delay and I lose the great smile my baby girl just had on her face and capture a blurry image of a hand coming at the camera.

How many shots can the camera take a second? I like cameras that can take many shots fast, so if I get a blurry image - say in a wedding - one of the succeeding photographs (at three shots a second) will get the clear shot in that ever so crucial moment.

Speed is one of the most important points of buying a camera. How fast does the camera click once you press that button.

3. Ask the Pro's.

There are a lot of customer reviews out there. And reviews can be tainted.

I recommend you trace it backwards - find an image or photograph that you really like and find out what photographer or camera took the picture. Try and ask a pro. Cameras can get expensive.

If you are looking for a low-cost camera, choose a company that specializes in making cameras - not just electrical parts. Two of my favorites are Nikon and Cannon. Try not to go with cheapest model, usually, I like some in-between models. Again, understand the limitations of the lens, the memory, the speed and the over-all quality.

Digital Photography Accessories and Cameras Tutorial

Digital photography is a fast growing industry. Today, technology is making it possible to do nearly anything you want with photos, by using software, quality cameras, accessories and more. Starting with accessories, we will consider a few items that may help you along your journey in photography. Personally, I employ journey often while writing about photography, since it all respects photography is a journey, adventure, experience, creation and more rolled into one goal.

Few of the accessories available to photographers or potentials are the lens attachments. You can purchase a converter attachment to give you a wider look at the picture in consideration. Some attachments work like a telescope and are designed to fit the telescopic lens. Cradles are dock stations. Similar to a ship at a dock, the passengers either board or get off board the ship, the dock station for cameras enable you to load your photos onto the dock reducing the stress of transferring while charging the battery life at the same time. What a valuable accessory.

Direct printing is preferred, i.e. some cameras now will enable you to attach the camera directly to the printer and print the images stored on the device. What a handy gadget.

Battery choice is also important while considering life. If you don't purchase the right battery accessories, your photography career may blunder. Lithium-ion batteries are often the choice batteries employed today.

Well now, we consider a few accessories; let's move on to cameras since both accessories and cameras combine. We spoke earlier in different articles regarding flashguns; however, I will bring this up once more. Come cameras have hot-shoes which enable the user to connect to a flashgun which will enhance photo take.

Cameras to Consider, including Low and Mid-Range, Premium, etc
While considering cameras you want to think budget, premium, low-end, and mid-range. If you are dressing up web pages, you may want to consider the low cost one mega-pixel Sport models. These digital cameras have all you need to get those web pages dressed for action. Remember, keep the resolution at around 72dpi (dots per inch) while loading, and keep the format at JPEG or GIFF, preferably JPEG. Furthermore, keep your images to a limit per page to attract more visitors. Try to use hyperlinks via text links to avoid automatic downloading, since this will only discourage visitors.

The low-end cameras sometimes have a couple of mega-pixels, yet they are often convenient for en-printed photos. Some cameras have fixed lens while others may have wide-angle lens. The wide-angle is more preferred for long distance shots.

Premium cameras give you a higher resolution, since you get around four or five mega-pixels. This camera is ideal for photographers, since it incorporates features that are often integrated into the more sophisticated cameras.

Mid-range cameras have a three, to four mega-pixels with high resolution. The formal and latter cameras are not ideal for web page creation.

Well now, we have SLR cameras, which the 35mm digitals and AF models are commonly employed by photographers, as well as the film and digital compacts. Other types of cameras are available, yet what camera is right for you again depends on your budget, your purpose and so forth.

Tips for web creation:
If you are considering images and photos for your web pages, not only keeping them a low resolution will enhance your web pages ranking and notability it will make downloads go a lot smoother. Also, you want to add keyword dense and text links to your site, since visitors often enjoy these search engine-optimizing strategies over full-impact web pages with scores of images and photos.

However, there is one item that has gained an incredible boost from the digital revolution, cameras.

Digital cameras have revolutionized how we take photos and the camera industry and the camera market have taken advantage of this opportunity by developing digital cameras. Since we don't have to deal with film and the ensuing film processing we are addicted to instant photo gratification and more and more people are finding themselves in the market to purchase a digital camera from themselves.

Because of the increasing demand and the plethora of choices on the market consumers are finding that there are incredible discounts available. This means you can get more bang for your buck when purchasing a digital camera.

Yet, you may be asking yourself, where do you find the discounted digital cameras? This digital photography tutorial is designed to point you in the right direction so you can find exactly what you are looking for at a price that will make you smile.

The Internet is one of the best ways to find discounts on the digital cameras you are looking for. There is no faster and comprehensive medium like Internet. With research you can easily find discounts on all sorts of cameras, undoubtedly including the one you are looking for. Moreover there are thousands of sites which deal with digital cameras and offer discounts. If you know what you are looking for you will undoubtedly find it at one of the many online stores and online retailers at an incredible discount.

Knowing what you are looking for will help when comparing the discounted rates which are offered by different online retailers. For example you want a 3.0 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom and a 2 inch LCD monitor and an aperture range from f/2.0-f/8.0. There are a variety of manufacturers who make cameras that meet these specifications and who offer them at different prices. For those of you interested in digital photography, tutorials are going to be a great way to get yourself familiarized with the tricks of the trade. Let's start off by learning some things about digital cameras.

Filters were once an essential part of photography but are they still required in digital photography?

Filters are basically made from plastic or glass and are placed in front of the lens to prevent some light waves from reaching the sensor. And although a majority of the filters are manufactured for DSLR cameras, generic filters can also be purchased to be used with digital cameras.

The first most common type of filter being used is the UV filter. Often a UV filter is placed on the lens to not only filter UV rays but also to protect the surface of the lens. Far better to scratch the replaceable filter than your lens itself!

The next is the ND Grad, or Neutral Density Graduation filter. This filter is separated into two sections, with one region being significantly darker than the other. The ND filter is used for landscape photography when there is too much contrast in a scene to hold both hilites and shadows i.e Sky and the land. What is does is to darken the sky and balance the exposure stops between the two, i.e. sky and land. The brightness range problem is also significantly solved with this filter. Another must have recommended in all digital photography tutorials. However this is one case where I personally very rarely use Grads as I prefer to take several exposures and combine them in Photoshop.

Another filter worthy of a mention is a polarizer which cannot be completely replaced by digital post production techniques. A polarizer allows you to adjust specific light rays that should pass through the lens onto the sensor. This filter is best used to compensate for the excessive reflections from a surface like a lake or similar surfaces but also can help saturate colours.

As you can see from just mentioning these few filters above some are no longer a must have in your camera bag while others still a place.

My advice is if you need to use filters in your photography and you can afford it buy the better quality glass filters as you'd be surprised how much cheaper filters can spoil the quality of your images.

Photography Tutorial: A Guide on How to Take HDR Photographs

Many people find that when they take photographs, it is either under-exposed or over-exposed. However, more often than that you will see that certain parts of your photo are under-exposed however other parts are far too over-exposed. HDR photography is combining three different photographs and forming one image. The reason people use this is because the three different exposures combine together to give you the optimum look for your photo. For example, when you take a photo the sky is often overblown whilst the ground is too dark. Using HDR the ground will be nice and light and the sky's colour will be more blue than white! HDR also gives your photos a unique feel as well as great versatility when it comes to post-processing. Here's how to take a HDR photograph:

You will firstly need a DSLR camera. Any will do. A lot of point shoot cameras now have the option to take HDR photos, even the iPhone does as well!

With your DSLR, head over to the exposure settings. You are now going to set a bracket, which means, your camera will take three separate photos of the different exposures which you set. Using "-2", "0", and "+2" is usually the ideal.

You will now need to set your camera to take the three photos. If you are using a canon camera then you will need to set the camera into continuous shooting mode (the camera keeps taking photos until you let go of the shutter). If you are using the 550d it is usually the right button on the 4 way selector which takes you into the mode.

Go ahead and take your photos! This is the part where you do the actual photography. All you have to do is hold down the shutter and then your camera will take the three pictures (you can take more if you want).

Tip: make sure you are using the fastest shutter speed possible. If you don't then your photo will look very odd when you combine them all together. This is because some parts will have moved in your picture, which will result and all three of the photos looking different.

Once you have your three photos, you are going to need and editing software. Majority of people use photoshop, however, if you are looking for something more automated, then using something like "luminance" will be a far easier option. With luminance, you will need to upload your photos and tell the software which exposure settings you used for each one. It will then generate the final HDR image.

Before exporting the image, you will need to edit it slightly so the colours look more accurate, or just more how you were intending them to be. For example making your photo have a "cooler" look makes all of the blues stand out more without affecting the rest of your parts. Using a warmer tone will make the reds and oranges stand out more.

When you are using HDR, the most important thing it to just have fun experimenting with your images. There is no ideal settings as it just greatly depends on the situation.

Product Photography Techniques Tutorial

Product photography involves photographing a single product by itself with a plain background to remove any distractions and focus the viewer's attention on the product. While practicing product photography can be fun in of itself, it is particularly important if you want to sell items on eBay or through your own website. A good product image can make your listings more effective and increase your sales.

To set up an area for product photography, you can use a table pushed against a wall. Use a piece of large white card and attach one end to the wall and one end to the table. Be careful to ensure the card has a curved bend where it goes from the wall (vertical) to the table (horizontal) as you want to avoid any creases in the card. This will create a white seamless background for your product photography.

Next set up a couple of lights or flashes to light your product and the background. A two light setup can result in much better photos than relying on natural light. The ability to control the power, shape, size, and position of lighting gives you much greater control over how the photos will look.

Always-on hot lamps, small speedlights, and full size flash strobes will all work well for lighting, so long as you have some way of controlling their power output. Use light stands to hold your lights in place, this will keep the lighting consistent between shots. Your lighting needs to be diffused otherwise you will end up with harsh shadows that distract from the product.

To diffuse the lighting, there are a large of accessories available. Some common diffusion techniques are using a softbox, reflector, shoot through umbrella, or reflective umbrella. These attach to your lights or the light stands. Diffusing the light will help bring out texture and detail in the product without causing harsh shadows and clipped highlights.

If using flash units for lighting (as opposed to always-on hot lamps), you will need some way of triggering the flashes. You can use flash sync cords that connect the flash units to the camera, or radio trigger units. Some speedlights can also be triggered by an infra-red signal from your camera's pop-up flash.

Position your product on your backdrop, and set up your camera on a tripod. For product photography a focal length of 35mm - 100mm will work well, giving you a reasonable working distance between the camera and the product. Take some test shots, adjust the brightness of your lights as necessary, and position the lights to give pleasing lighting. Two lights pointing down at the product 45° to either side from the front works well in most cases.

If you would like a reflection underneath your product, place the product on a piece of perspex plastic. Shoot down at a slight angle to include the reflection from the perspex in the image.

Take a variety of shots of your product, at different angles, and some detail shots. Once you have your lighting set up correctly, taking extra photos should be just a case of changing the position of the product, and possibly adjusting your camera position slightly.

Depending on the size of your product, a macro lens may be needed for taking detail shots. Macro lenses are specially designed to be able to focus at close distances, and maintain their sharpness, where with other lenses image quality may degrade at short distances.

While it may cost a bit to purchase light stands, speedlights or strobes, and diffusers, it can make a big difference to your product photos. And if you are a business, good product photos can make a big difference to your sales. If you are a budding photographer, remember that these accessories are also useful for other types of photography, such as portrait photography, and will likely be a good investment towards improving your photography.

Product photography can easily be carried out at home or in the office, and you don't need a lot of expensive equipment (though some basic equipment such as lights will make it easier). For more advice on product photography, see product photography tips. As well as photographing products for use on a website or eBay, photographing your latest purchase just to show off to friends on Facebook or Flickr can be fun. And if you follow these product photography tips, your friends will marvel at your photos.

Learning The Basics With Digital Photography Tutorials

Most of the latest cameras come with a digital photography tutorial that literally takes you by the hand and teaches you all that you need to know about taking photographs with the digital camera you just bought. For best results use those lessons of the digital photography tutorial that matches with your level of knowledge; you would find three types of tutorials basic, advanced and expert.

What Are The Major Highlights That A Digital Photography Tutorial Gives You

The first thing that you would learn from the digital photography tutorial is how to handle the camera. You will find that the most complex digital camera would require no more than ten minutes to master its use. This is because in a digital camera everything is computerized and all you need to learn is to how to give it your command.

The next thing that the tutorial would teach you is how to take a picture in different circumstances, i.e. in full sun, on a cloudy day, when the sun is in front of you and when it is behind you, when the lighting is very poor or very bright and so on. Though generally the lighting conditions are taken care of by the camera automatically, the tutorial would explain to you the different aspects so you would understand its function better and be able to use it manually when shooting special subjects.

Next comes the shutter speed, aperture and exposure which normally would be set manually in a regular camera; with a digital camera your work is very much simplified as its inbuilt sensors are meant to understand the conditions and type of subject (whether moving or still) you are shooting and give you the best possible combinations for shooting your target. The digital photography tutorial would once again explain how the camera functions and why you do not need to worry about these aspects as you would have had to do if you used a regular camera.

Lastly, the digital photography tutorial would take you through the use of the photography software with which you could edit and further perfect the pictures you shot. Most of the software in question would allow a vast range of manipulations to the photographs you download would open for you a new world of creativity.

As you finish the tutorial, immediately apply what you learned and practice the maneuvers until you are fully conversant and comfortable with the procedures taught. In case you have started with the basic, remember you would still have two more levels to cover. With each level you cross you would be able to understand and use your digital camera better and get some exceptional results with the photographs you shoot.

How to Take Amazing Flower Photos - A Tutorial in Macro Photography

Flowers are one of my favorite photography subject. They can't complain if the photo doesn't come out right. Flowers also look very different when shot from different angles and zoom levels. Explore the flower from these different angles to get completely new photos. While taking photos indoors, the 2 most important things to keep in mind are lighting and background.

1) Choose a diffused light source like a large window or multiple lamps to throw light on the flowers. Harsh lighting sources can cause the photograph to look washed out.

2) Pick an uncluttered background such as a plain wall. You can even hang a cloth at a distance behind the flowers to get a plain solid colored background. Make sure that the background is far away from the subject. This ensures that it's out of focus and also makes sure that no shadows fall on the background.

3) Chose a low depth of field. Keeping the depth of field low will reduce the background clutter and draw attention to the flower. Low depth of field is achieved by opening up the lens wide.

Outdoors, it's tougher to control the background.

4) Moving around to change the angle of the shot can dramatically change the background. Choose an angle from where the background is far away from the flower itself. May photographers carry a few plain cloth sheets with them to use as backgrounds.

5) Carry a Macro lens or extension tubes. Macro lenses allow you to get closer to the subject and still focus on them. Extension tubes allow you to reuse your lenses and reduce the minimum focusing distance of your lenses. Since they don't have any optical components, they don't harm the image quality in any way.

6) Add an insect to the photograph to make it more interesting. The best time to photograph is during early morning since the insects are still inactive due to the night's cold and dew.

7) Rain and Dew make the flower shots more interesting. Look for flowers with dew drops on them or just spray some yourself.

Post processing of flower photos

8) You can always post process the photo to enhance it. Some of the common post processing techniques used in flower photos are cropping the photograph, increasing saturation to give richer colors, increasing contrast and brightness and adding vignetting effects. Vignetting effect is the dark shadows on the corners of the photograph's frame often caused by the lens. Adding vignetting increases the focus to the center of the photograph.

Digital Photography Tutorial - 3 Great Tips For Buying A Digital Camera

This digital photography tutorial lists the 3 most important tips to remember if you are looking at buying a digital camera.

1) Price - How much are you likely to spend?

Obviously cost is a major consideration when it comes to what camera you buy. Even if you have found the digital camera with all the features you were looking for, doesn't actually mean you should go ahead and buy it. Now a bit of research is a must, so have a look at what's on offer on sites like eBay and Amazon, which normally offer such items with heavy discounts.

You will need to read over the product description with a keen eye as well as checking over the vendor's feedback history, which will help ensure a safe purchase transaction.

2) Your Photography Goal - Business or pleasure?

You have to determine just what sort of photos you would like to shoot with your digital camera. You may just need a camera for taking photos of your family, pets or travels, but you may be looking at making at business out of you digital photography, so you will have to pay great attention to the features on offer.

Being able to research features is a much easier task if you have a clear photography goal in mind. If your intention is to get a camera for family parties and social events then you will just need to concentrate on automatic focus and automatic flash features. On the other hand, if you are shooting photos of sporting events, racing cars or any sort of action shots, then you will need a digital camera that has adjustable shutter speed settings, so that you can shoot clear crisp pictures.

Whatever the photography goal you have in mind, always bear it in mind when looking at the features of a camera you are thinking of buying.

3) Camera lifetime expectancy - Make sure the digital camera is durable.

Digital cameras come with either metal or plastic shells, and the latter even though more inexpensive can easily break if dropped, so always consider buying a camera that is both solid and durable. Remember that your camera purchase is an investment, so don't just through your money down the drain for the cheapest camera you find.

You could even purchase certain accessories to protect your camera from cracks and scratches, like a carrying case, although my advise would be to buy a camera that you know is both of good quality and high durability.

I hope that this quick digital photography tutorial will assist you in beginning your adventure into the very rewarding world of taking digital photos. I would also recommend that you also make any online payments by PayPal, as it would be so much easier to get a refund, should your digital camera not arrive in prime condition.

Depth of Field - Digital Photography Tutorial

Actually, I touched base on this subject in a previous digital photography tutorial. In photography, you consider composition, focal point, foreground, background, slants, frames, thirds, lines, perspective, scale, and so forth. The focal point is the objective of the game in a way, yet composition is the target. I used the terms plot in previous publications because those less familiar with digital imaging might find it easier to relate.

Anyway, all there terms sounds nuts if you don't understand photography; however, the focal point is a natural attraction to the eye, while composition is the plot. Let's break this down. Okay, you are writing a book on the subject photography. You know the main composition is surrounding photography; however, you must capture cameras, film, printers, etc in the body to make someone understand what you are seeing and how it works. Likewise, if you are snapping pictures you will need a main attraction, which will lead the eyes to a foreground, background, focal point, and so forth. You need something to hit home in this picture in other words. Yet, while the eye is hitting home, it also wants a feel of the surroundings so that it can see where the picture is leading. What does it mean? What did you see in this picture that I am missing?

For example, I am taking a shot of a barn off in the distance and in its surrounding, is a field of yellow flowers of some sort and green grass beneath it. The foreground (flowers) leads me up to the caption that I had targeted, which makes a person wonder why someone would want a picture of the likes. The imagination starts to explore. In this picture, I used the rule of the thirds while adding a foreground to the scene.

In the depth of field, I snap a shot of a clear blue sky with sorted clouds dancing in the air. A distant hill captures the sky bringing it down to the earth's surface, which we know is not real. The foreground takes the front leading you to a boulder half buried in the ground with more boulders spread out in a filed of yellow with shades of green grass. In this scene, I would use a lens that focuses on the length the lens will extend, the distance focus, and the aperture option. Since this is a landscape photo, I would use an aperture size of small to reach an effect.

If you are taking photos of landscape, the wide-angle lenses are the best choice. The lens will provide a depth deeper than other model lens. An f/22 depth is ideal if you are snapping pictures at a distance.

It makes a big difference how you use a camera as to how the film or photo will turn out. If you are starting out in photography, your best bet is becoming acquainted with the terms photographers use, including their definitions. While there are software programs for editing available, if you get the feel of the camera and use it wisely, you will spend less time in front of a computer and more time in the field snapping those shots.

After writing around 50 digital photography tutorials I've learned a lot about photography. However, the one thing I already knew is that your eyes and instincts will guide you better than anyone or any device. If you are working towards becoming a professional, never let anyone defy you of your natural instincts and eye, which will only guide you towards the wrong direction. Keep it real and go with your gut feeling!

Digital Photography Tutorial - Looking At How To Photograph Wildlife

If you look on the shelves of any book or magazine stores you will find many that are dedicated to wildlife photography. In addition to the countless books and magazines there are thousands of web sites and blogs related to photographing wildlife and mastering the techniques of just how to photograph wildlife.

This is one of the areas of digital photography where the better the equipment you have, the better the results. That said, it takes more than a long lens and a silent camera. It also requires a lot of practice and a huge amount of patience.

It doesn't matter whether you are taking pictures of birds of prey in your local woods or lions on the Serengeti plains, you will struggle to take good photographs of wildlife if you don't own an interchangeable-lens SLR. Capturing birds in mid-flight is one of the most challenging things for a photographer to attempt. An SLR makes this so much easier.

It is a different matter of course, if you want to photograph farm animals or are on an organized safari where you can get up and close with the animals and they are used to a human presence. In cases like this, you are much more likely to have better success with a compact camera, especially if it has a decent zoom range.

Zoos and wildlife parks are an ideal place to snap exotic animals.

Top Digital Photography Tutorial Tip: Try to zoom in on the animal itself by using the long end of your lens. If you use a long lens and wide aperture (small f-number) you will usually find that the limited depth of field makes the wire fences magically disappear.

Obviously if you are going to shoot between the bars make sure you are not taking any risks and you are keeping tight hold of your camera.

I have witnessed on several occasions mischievous monkeys grab cameras from over eager snappers in Gibraltar where they virtually have the freedom of the rock.

How to Improve Photography Skills With Photography Tutorial

Capturing attractive and informative photos can also be a daunting task for a beginner. The reason is that practice makes a man perfect, hence, unless the person, who wants to make his/her career in this field, don't spend some time in understanding different aspects of the photography how he/she would learn that how he/she can implement the right thing on the right time. The shortest way to avail with some essentials of the photography is to consult a photography tutorial through which one gets the knowledge on different photography subjects.

Here are some tips for beginners:

These tips really help the beginners to know them about those shortcomings that are responsible for ruining their pictures and make them prepare to walk on the improved way.

The first and the foremost thing when you decide to capture the photos is to select a message or subject of the photo. It is true that if you fail to deliver the picture that doesn't convey any message then it will probably a useless collection. Today's people are more advanced and always look for things that can help them to explore their knowledge. Hence, they like the photos that have something to inform.

One needs to know both points- what to exclude and what in include. The importance of exclusion of the things is similar to inclusion of the things. This is one of the most important points covered by every photography tutorial. If one includes unnecessary items in his/her photos then it makes the viewing less interesting, leaving a negative impact on the mind of the viewers.

If one prepares himself/herself to focus at what he/she exactly wants to show his/her viewers then it helps both- the photographer and the viewer. If one finds that the thing he/she wants to capture is too much far away then he/she should use the feature of zoom in through which he/she provides his/her picture with better quality clearing the message what he/she has to give his/her viewers.

Almost all photography tutorials covered these points which can really make a big difference when it comes to improving the photography skills.

Digital Photography Tutorial For Capturing Perfect Wedding Memories

Undoubtedly a wedding is one of the most precious moments in a couple's life. Preserving it through photos is one way to keep the memories alive for a lifetime. There are a variety of options that today's brides and grooms can choose from when it comes to deciding the kind of photographs they want to have for one of the most important days of their lives.

This digital photography tutorial will now reveal some awesome tips to produce the wedding photos of a couple's dreams:

1. Selecting the right photographer

Before you can choose a wedding photographer the couple must first decide on the styles of photos they want.

Portrait photographers are perfectly capable of capturing both formal and casual photos, however he will most likely concentrate on the formal ones.

Photojournalists mostly take candid shots, not posed. This kind of photographer usually has experience in journalism photography.

Hobbyist photographers are typically a friend or relative who would offer their service for a pretty low price. Unless they have taken wedding photos before you probably won't know what kinds of photos they will take and you do run the risk of having photos not turn out as well as what you would receive from a professional.

2. Finding the perfect camera

Wedding photographers usually use two basic camera types: the 35mm and the medium format. The 35mm has the tendency to produce pictures that are a little grainy, but its usually only the photographer themselves that notice the difference.

3. Color or black and white photos?

Color is what is typically used in wedding photos; however, black and white photos do lend a dramatic effect. Black and white photos will typically last longer than color photos, though color films capture the details of the event more appropriately. You can have your photos all taken in color and then converted into black and white once you have viewed the images.

4. Personality of the photographer

Most couples want a photographer who can take great pictures but who is also friendly and sociable. Interview your photographer candidates and make sure you can work together. You also want to ask for references and view his portfolio of work to make sure his standards meet yours.

Following these tips will help couples get the perfect photos to preserve the memories of their special day. Great photos can be showcased proudly and passed down to future generations to cherish.

There is a common misconception that only expensive items are of good quality; however, when purchasing a digital camera you can toss this notion out the window. It is easy to find a quality inexpensive camera with features that will meet every need.

Inexpensive cameras are ideal for most everyone's needs. All of the major, name brand manufacturers, including Fuji, Kodak, Samsung, Olympus, Nikon and HP, market digital cameras at reasonable prices. When digital cameras were first on the market you were faced with spending enormous amounts of money, thankfully today you can find a camera under $100 that has all the features you are looking for including 5 mega pixels and a great zoom lens. Most cameras are compact and can be carried with you anywhere so you can take great pictures no matter where you are.

If you have a more constrained budget you can find cameras with anywhere from 3.1 to 5 mega pixels for under $50. You will find that the features on these cameras are a bit more limited, with a smaller zoom range, yet they are ideal for typical personal use.

To get the most bang for your buck I advise that you do some Internet research, learning the terminology that you will see when looking for your camera. Understanding the terms and knowing exactly what you would like to have will help narrow down your search. Even though there are some incredible opportunities on the Internet, if you don't know exactly what it is you are looking for you will have a very difficult time finding the best camera for you.

If you would like to have more than a point and shoot camera you will be looking at cameras in the $100 to $200 range. Cameras in this price range have an incredible amount of features and are perfect if you would like to take professional quality photos. Cameras in this range are generally small enough to take wherever you wish to go to get incredible, spur of the moment, photos.

In fact, most cameras on the market today are incredibly compact, generally small enough to be slipped into the pocket. Most of these cameras have 8 to 10 mega pixels which will create quality prints in the 4x6 - 8x10 range. When you do your research you will learn that the higher the mega pixel rating the larger the print you will be able to make, as well as the better the overall quality of the photo. Some of the manufacturers that you will want to look for include Konica, Minolta, Nikon, Sony and Olympus. Features to expect include optical zoom, multi-scene, LCD and a few other useful functions.

For a more professional camera you can spend more than $200; in this price range you will find 12 mega pixels, image stabilization high resolution sensors and an ultra compact body. It is even possible to find basic SLR cameras at this price range, allowing you to change out lenses. Even though SLR cameras are bulkier you are definitely moving out of the point and shoot range to the professional arena. In this price range you can also purchase ultra compact cameras. These are typically the size of a credit card and 1" thick. The nice thing about these cameras is that even though these cameras are thin they still contain the advanced features such as digital zoom and LCD.

Research is key to finding the best deal. The Internet is the worlds largest library and here you can not only find discounts but stay abreast of the latest innovations in digital cameras. Prior to purchasing you definitely want to make some price comparisons and there are a variety of sites that allow you to do this.

Digital Photography Tutorials, Are a Relatively New Art

Digital Photography, now surfacing and abandoning the older art of film photography, is slowly capturing the hearts of most enthusiasts of photography in general. The more user friendly type of controls and easier accessibility made it even more popular. In film photography, where the focus is more on the negatives and developing the same, was more tuned to older enthusiasts. More, the necessity for a darkroom to develop images made this art accessible to rich people.

However, say goodbye to those days where the need for darkroom is necessary and throw those negatives.

Digital Photography Tutorials, are a relatively new art, is easy to learn. Just take note of this tutorial, and you would be more than prepared to take on the challenge and shoot your way to happiness!

First, think of doing a Digital Photography Tutorial as a hobby, a way of capturing God's painting to your own interpretation, which leaves you that freedom - emphasis given to the phrase "your interpretation." Photography is a painting that is faithful to its subject, once you get to enjoy what you are doing, everything would follow.

With digital photography tutorials you can use autofocus more often to make your life easier. In autofocus, you do not have to twist the focus ring as the camera would do it for you. This would come in handy in quick situations where fast shooting is needed. Try to couple it with continuous burst, and then you would be more than fine in your works!

The post processing may be the very distinctive and levelled up feature that a photographer gets from transferring to digital. Post processing is the method that photographers use to enhance their photos, making them more convincing and pleasurable to the human eye. So how is this done? In post processing, you could liberally tweak the contrast of the image, brightness of the image is it is to dark or light, colour levels for emphasis of some colours, and so on. There is also an image correction option that enables you to remove blemishes from the final image - you could remove pimples or dark spots in portraits, remove vignettes that are caused by your lens hood, lessen the noise, and erase unwanted elements in the picture.

But what sets from post processing is the option called high pass filter. Did you see that ultra sharp photo that looks as if it was captured using a micrometric camera? Well, those are achievable via high pass filter. The procedure for digital photography tutorials are quite simple:

1. Open your image.

2. Create a duplicate layer on top of the original image.

3. Click on high pass filter.

4. Manipulate the pixel slider. The ideal pixel count is somewhere between 2-10 px, depending on the photo, a higher pixel count is needed for more detailed photos.

5. Once finished, see how the image turned grey. Change its layer mode to overlay, soft light, or hard light, depending on the picture.

The high pass filter is universally used by photographers around the world, so do not be scared to use it.

Photography purists are somehow bitter on what post processing has brought. They argue that is taints the very essence of photography. However, we could clearly see the improvement it had brought, so that must be taken into account. Photography, like any other form of art, is constantly growing. It must grow with other art in order to grow.

Now, with the more basic principles of digital photography tutorials, it would be a lot easier for you to start. So pick up your digital camera, think of a subject, focus, and then shoot! After all, digital photography is a revolutionized art for everyone to enjoy!

Hi, I am Gaylene Slater, the author of Living the Good Life in Love, Life and Family. Living in a small town in rural West Australia does have its challenges, although this is where I also found the inspiration to write my first book! All along our many travels I have been fortunate enough to engage in many photo opportunities and it really came to a head late last year when trying to master the art of photography. So I decided to help a few other people out and create a few articles on digital photography on how to use it, understand how creative it can be, but most of all just how to really enjoy taking good quality photos. Too really enjoy photography you really need to understand it and be able to use a camera as an extension of your body, mind and soul, only then will the photos really show what you want to see feel and enjoy. For either your own personal library or as a professional photographer the results are all in how you learn it and use it, these articles should help.
